Finasteride for Prevention of Prostate Cancer: Results from 25-year Follow-Up Study

Data from a 25-year (!) study clearly support the idea the 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor Finasteride can help prevent prostate cancer.  The data are from the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT) and put to rest concerns that prolonged Finasteride use might lead to high grade disease. Dr. Ian Thompson, MD, the Lead on the study stated “What we ultimately found were fewer prostate cancer deaths with finasteride, demonstrating with prolonged follow-up, that there was no greater risk of prostate cancer death with the drug, just fewer cancers.”
